The Works And Days By Edgar Allan Poe - 1719 Words

â€Å"Poetry is artistically rendering words in such a way as to evoke intense emotion or an Ah Ha! experience from the reader (Flanagan).† It all started in 2000 B.C., but it was called epic poetry. It was called that because poetry was orally spoken instead of written. It was a tradition from the Sumerians. Throughout the years, it became more popular. The poetry’s structure was improved, and poets began to use forms of meter. However, it could be free verse, who is remarkably known to invent this was Walt Whitman. Poets became important in today’s society. They added meaning to poetry. Some famous poets were Homer and Hesiod. Homer was memorable for the â€Å"Odyssey† and the â€Å"Iliad.† Hesiod is distinguished for the â€Å"Works and Days† (Uttley). One†¦show more content†¦A man named John Allan and his wife adopted Poe into their family but not legally. They lived in Virginia. John Allan exported tobacco for a living, and he became wealthy (Museum). This affected Poe, because now he could go to better schools. He went to England and studied there for five years at the age of six, where he learned two languages, math, and history. Afterwards, he came back to the U.S. to finish his education (Giordano). Mr. Allan wanted him to be a businessman and sell tobacco, but Poe wanted to be a writer. British poet Lord Byron inspired him. Mr. Allan would sometimes find poetic verses on his sheets, and it showed him that Poe was not interested selling tobacco. Edgar wrote so much poetry that it was enough to publish a book, but his principal didn’t allow it (Museum). In 1826, Poe was granted to attend University of Virginia. He then began to drink massively (Giordano). Less than a year of school, he had to leave because he owed money to the University. Mr. Allan’s and Poe’s relationship was not healthy. So, Edgar moved to Boston. He then enrolled into the United States Army. While in the United States Army, he published some of his poetry (Lilly). While Edgar was in the army, he excelled through the ranks. He became a sergeant major. In 1829, John Allan’s wife died. After this happened, Mr. Allan tried to improve Poe’s and his relationship (Giordano). John Allan then signed an application for Edgar to attend West Point. West Point accepted him,
